You are probably wondering what exactly is Astaxanthin and why the heck you need to know about it. Let alone read a blog post about it! If you are interested in your skin’s health and appearance, you will want to stay tuned. Astaxanthin has so many proven anti-aging benefits it’s hard to know where to start. Astaxanthin is the next best skincare ingredient and can be a real game changer!

First – what is Astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is a King Carotenoid!

This red carotenoid is derived from a micro alga called Haematococcus Pluvialis. Carotenoids play an important role in plant health. They are pigments of plants or algae that give their characteristic & vibrant colour (mainly red, orange, and yellow). High amounts of carotenoids are found in tomatoes, squash, oranges, watermelon & carrots… oh and the beautiful autumn leaves that are starting to make an appearance.

Astaxanthin is an antioxidant B-O-S-S! Astaxanthin’s unusual molecular structure gives it an Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) Score of a whopping 2,822,000! (1) Just to put that in perspective for you –  blueberries, highly acknowledged antioxidants, have an ORAC score of 9,621*. This is 6000 times more powerful than Vitamin C.

Antioxidants fight free radical damage that cause severe skin deterioration. So, what does that mean? Ultimate protection for your skin! Clinical studies including Astaxanthin have shown it to improve moisture retention, reduce wrinkles, and protect from and neutralize photo damage.

See ya later dark spots! Astaxanthin is a wonderful brightening agent! While it helps reduce those pesky dark spots, it also protects your skin so that it can repair itself. The natural UV-blocking properties of Astaxanthin should not replace sunblock but you will love the extra protection!

Bounce back! Astaxanthin bumps up your skin’s circulation which increases cell turnover and skin elasticity. A 2018 study demonstrated that Astaxanthin inhibits the breakdown of peptide bonds in collagen, assists in cellular repair and protects from oxidative damaging effects, “resulting in potent antiwrinkle and antioxidant effects.”

Great for acne-prone skin! “Studies have found applying antioxidants to the skin is more effective at reducing acne than benzoyl peroxide and retinoids.” (2)

Astaxanthin is an ingredient than can play a decisive role in your skincare regimen. When selecting what is best for you, make sure to find non-toxic skincare products that contain authentic, pure Astaxanthin.

Astaxanthin can also be taken as a supplement. There have been clinical studies that demonstrated several health benefits but please speak with your doctor if you are considering taking any supplements.

Haven’t convinced you to try skincare products with Astaxanthin? I have included some other interested articles and studies done to show the vast benefits of including Astaxanthin in your skincare.
