5 EYE CREAM TIPS THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW NOW
Eye cream: to use or not to use. That is the question.
Well… YES! One key way to keeping skin strong and healthy under the eyes is to use an eye cream. Eye creams are made specifically for the delicate skin under the eyes and contain active ingredients that are aimed at eye area problems. Quality eye creams contain potent antiaging formulations that target many eye skin concerns.
Here are 5 tips for getting the most out of your eye cream.
The skin around the eyes is super delicate so is the first place we start to show our age – wrinkles, sagging, thinning skin, dark circles and crepiness. This skin is also more prone to dryness, sun damage and irritation. As we age, the skin around our eyes starts to thin and lose its strength and elasticity. One of the best things to do to fight premature aging is to take care of the skin around your eyes from an early age. Using an eye cream twice a day will keep skin looking young for as long as possible.
Better Late than Never
If you already have mature skin, it’s never too late to start taking care of the fragile undereye area. Many of us are realizing later in life how important an eye cream is. NOW is the time! Taking care of your undereye area is just as important as looking after the skin on your face.
Tip #1: Dab Dab Dab
Use a gentle touch. Dab the eye cream between your two ring fingers. Ring fingers are our weakest so the best to use for application. Use these fingers to dot eye cream along each of your eye socket bones and brow bones, going in a semi-circle shape. Using your ring fingers will help keep a gentle touch when applying it. You do not want to be pulling at this skin as it is thinner and more sensitive than the rest of your face.
‘”You don’t want any stretching,” Dr. Colbert says. “The skin under the eye is a different structure from the rest of the face; it’s more delicate,” So if you’re really moving your skin around when you rub cream in, you’re probably doing it too hard.” – Into the Gloss (1)
Tip #2: A little goes a long way
Under-eye skin is so delicate so you do not need a lot of product. With clean hands, dispense only a small amount of eye cream: up to a pea size amount.
Eye cream can cost a pretty penny so you are going to want to get the most bang for your buck! Using more isn’t going to increase the effectivity of the cream. You run the risk of it landing in your eyes and causing irritation. Don’t go too close to your eyes!
Tip #3: Apply to damp skin
Applying eye cream to damp skin can help lock in moisture. Its function is to seal in hydration so applying to slightly moist skin will help it work better and seal in hydration.
Tip #4: Eye cream twice a day keeps the wrinkles away
Although you might change up the formulas of each, eye cream should be applied both morning and night. For morning routine, we recommend wearing a lighter eye cream or eye gel and waiting 2 minutes to let it fully absorb before applying the rest of your products. This will make it easier to apply makeup and so you won’t feel like a greasy mess walking out the door.
Save the richer consistency eye cream for your night time routine. Your skin switches into ‘repair mode’ at night so wearing an eye cream at night is the best way to help nourish, treat and rejuvenate skin under the eyes.
Tip #5: Splurge on eye cream
No, we are not saying break the bank! We are also not saying that all expensive eye creams are quality or the more the expensive the better. Unfortunately, however, in many cases you get what you pay for. You need be careful about the products you layer under your eyes. Using face or body moisturizers on the delicate skin under your eyes might be too irritating.
Reading labels and know what you are putting on your skin. You will start to realize:
- A lot of cheaper eye creams are diluted with chemicals and fillers and do not produce results.
- When you find a quality, hardworking eye cream it is definitely worth the extra money.
Eye Creams: Key Ingredients 101
What Works Best? Well, it depends on your skin type and what your concerns are.
Antiaging
As skin ages, it loses collagen so look for ingredients that encourage collagen production, such as Vitamin C, retinol and peptides.
Retinol
Using retinol can provide extraordinary antiaging results. However, we are not suggesting that you start lathering your retinol that you use for your face around your eyes! Ouch! Retinol causes a lot of side effects, especially with sensitive skin and you might experience a lot of irritation and redness. You will want to find an eye cream that contains a gentle dose of retinol. Also, looking for an ester of Vitamin A that is milder and better suited for sensitive skin, such as Retinyl Palmitate. Retinyl Palmitate is the least powerful retinoid that provides the benefits of retinol but at a slower rate.
Dryness
Looking for an eye cream infused with ingredients to target dryness will help hydrate and depuff under-eye skin. Ingredients such as Vitamin E, green tea, hyaluronic acid and murumuru.
Other skin-healthy ingredients to look for are alpha hydroxyl acids, caffeine, arginine, ferulic acid and chamomile. And of course, always wear SPF!
Eye puffiness/Eye Bags
Puffiness under the eyes is fluid retention usually caused by eating too much salt, alcohol or lack of sleep. Although an eye cream can help minimize the puffiness, you have to wait until your body works through draining the fluid naturally.
